Serial transmission - definition

Serial transmission is a mode of data transfer in which bits of information are transmitted one after the other, at successive intervals, over a single transmission line or communication channel. It is the primary mode of communication used in digital electronics and telecommunications, particularly where simplicity of connections, a small number of cables and limited hardware resources are crucial.

Unlike parallel transmission, where many bits are transmitted simultaneously over multiple lines, serial transmission uses fewer physical signal paths, reducing cost and circuit complexity, and minimising the risk of electromagnetic interference resulting from unsynchronised transmission. This type of transmission can take place in synchronous mode, where data is transmitted in the beat of a common clock, or asynchronous mode, where synchronisation is achieved by start and stop bits in each data frame.

Serial transmission is used extensively in communication interfaces such as UART, SPI, I²C, USB, RS-232, RS-485, as well as in more advanced technologies such as PCI Express, Ethernet or SATA. Due to its high flexibility and scalability, it is possible to transmit data over considerable distances and with high bandwidth, making this mode of transmission a key element of modern digital systems. An important aspect of serial transmission is also the protocol-based management of data Frames, error control and synchronisation mechanisms that ensure correct interpretation of information on the receiving side.

Transfer Multisort Elektronik (TME) is one of the world’s largest global distributors of electronic components, electrotechnical parts, workshop equipment, and industrial automation.
