Turbine is a flow machine that converts the energy of a stream of working medium - usually gas, steam or liquid - into mechanical energy, transmitted as torque to a shaft. The operation of a turbine is based on the principle of reaction or dynamic action, in which the working medium acts on the rotor blades, causing them to rotate. Depending on the design, the energy transferred can come from differential pressure, flow velocity or both combined.
The basic component of a turbine is a rotor with a system of profiled blades, mounted on a rotating shaft, and a steering system that directs the flow of the working medium at an appropriate angle. Turbine operation can be single or multiple stages, depending on the level of energy conversion required. The efficiency of the turbine depends on the aerodynamics of the blades, the flow conditions and the physical properties of the working medium. Due to their ability to operate with high efficiency at significant power outputs, turbines are used as key components in thermal, hydroelectric and gas-fired power plants, as well as in aerospace, industrial propulsion and energy recovery systems.
Based on the type of working medium, a distinction is made between water, steam, gas and air turbines. Each type has specific applications and a design adapted to the operating parameters and flow characteristics. Modern technology uses advanced materials, blade cooling and computer-aided design to enable turbines to operate under extreme pressure and temperature conditions. Turbines are a vital link in the conversion of primary energy into electrical or mechanical energy and play a key role in the power generation and modern propulsion industry.
