VHDL (VHSIC Hardware Description Language) is a digital hardware description language developed for the US Department of Defense's VHSIC (Very High Speed Integrated Circuit) programme. Its main purpose is the modelling, design and simulation of digital logic circuits at the level of gates, registers, functional blocks and entire electronic systems. VHDL allows the structure, behaviour and synchronisation of digital circuits to be mapped into source code.
The language combines the features of programming language with the capabilities of describing the parallel operation of digital structures. It allows designers to define both temporal and logical relationships between signals, including asynchronous and synchronous events. Thanks to its strong typification and formal syntax, VHDL promotes reliable and portable designs that can be automatically synthesised and implemented in Programmable circuits such as FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays) or ASICs (Application Specific Integrated Circuits).
The structure of designs in VHDL is based on dividing the code into two main parts: the declaration of the interface (entity) and the description of the behaviour or internal structure (architecture). This approach allows functional logic to be separated from implementation aspects and facilitates code reuse. VHDL also supports hierarchical design, making it possible to create complex systems from smaller, reusable components.
VHDL is an IEEE standard (IEEE 1076) and is used in both industrial and academic environments. Supported by a number of CAD/EDA tools, it enables timing simulations, testing the behaviour of designs under boundary conditions, and generating logic circuits that meet timing and functional requirements.
Transfer Multisort Elektronik (TME) is one of the world’s largest global distributors of electronic components, electrotechnical parts, workshop equipment, and industrial automation. The catalog includes over 1,500,000 products from 1,300 leading manufacturers. TME’s modern logistics centers in Łódź and Rzgów (Poland), with a combined area of over 40,000 m², ship nearly 6,000 packages daily to customers in more than 150 countries.
TME also invests in the development of knowledge and skills of young engineers and electronics enthusiasts through the TME Education project, and supports the tech community by organizing the TechMasterEvent series, promoting innovation and experience exchange.
