A logic gate is a fundamental functional element of digital circuits that performs logical operations on one or more binary input signals. Physically, it operates as an electronic circuit that receives input signals in the form of two logic levels—typically represented as 0 and 1—and produces a single output signal based on a specific logical rule. Each gate implements a Boolean function, such as conjunction (AND), disjunction (OR), or negation (NOT), as defined by Boolean algebra.
Logic gates form the basis for constructing more complex digital systems, including counters, registers, flip-flops, and ultimately microprocessors and embedded computer systems. By combining multiple gates in structured configurations, it is possible to process signals, perform calculations, make logical decisions, and control the operation of electronic devices. Logic gates can be physically implemented using various technologies, such as bipolar transistors, MOSFETs, or programmable integrated circuits.
