Gas soldering irons have quite a few advantages to them. Apart from their compact size (similar to a marker pen), they boast high efficiency and fast heating of the soldering tip. Their soldering tips can reach high temperatures, which makes it possible to use them not only with classic solders, but also with the ones that are lead-free. A gas soldering iron is an excellent universal tool, which can be easily stored in a practical toolbag. Inarguably, battery-powered soldering irons, which have become highly efficient due to advancements in science behind lithium-ion cells, have similar properties. Still, gas soldering irons have a certain advantage: even a small butane tank is sufficient for a relatively long operating time (an hour or longer) and it can be refilled in under a minute, which is much shorter than recharging a battery. For many models, easily available (e.g. in shops or newsstands) gas that is normally used in cigarette lighters will be suitable. The flame that heats the tip is started by way of piezoelectric or stone ignition. As gas soldering irons have fine tips, they can be used to fix electronic circuits, even the SMD ones. They are also irreplaceable when it comes to sudden, unplanned electric works.
In contrast to standard lighters, compact gas torches are designed to produce concentrated, strong flame for a long time its temperature can reach more than 1000°C (or even 1300°C in some models). These devices have many applications, including welding (for materials covered with heat-activated adhesives) or heat-shrink tubing. Gas torches will also be suitable for work with old, seized threading – you can use them to undo screws in machinery, but also in the automotive industry, hydraulics etc.
As it was mentioned above, a compact gas soldering iron is a device that can be used by those who don’t solder on a daily basis, for ad hoc work or tasks performed outdoors. Taking their purpose into account, it would be advisable to think if buying a gas-powered device is an optimal solution. If so, you should check what accessories are included in the set. Apart from a protective cap, sets often contain a case, additional tips or nozzles or even tip cleaning sponges. Some models also include stands and holders, which you can use to put the soldering iron down.
