The design of most of them is based on two basic components - a plug (typically pin contacts) and a socket (usually receptacle contacts). The openings are in analogous positions in the socket or plug. In terms of performance, an optimal connection occurs when the impedance of the connector tends to zero and its insulation to infinity. The connections themselves operate at relatively low voltages, ranging from one to tens of volts.
