Their characteristic feature is the fact that these components operate on low-current signals, as opposed to contactors supporting power systems, so that they are used in many areas of industry such as automation systems with PLC controllers, lighting modules or communication devices. The types include electromagnetic relays, solid state relays (SSR), timer relays and installation relays. The former work similarly to electromagnets – the magnetic field is created by the current in the coil. As a result, the armature is attracted to the core and acts on contact springs. Solid state relays, also known as semiconductor relays, are components in which the switching elements are triacs, transistors or thyristors (electronic components).
