Data conversion is the process of converting information stored in one form to another format, structure or representation type, while maintaining its meaning and integrity. This operation is commonly used in computer science, electronics and telecommunications systems, where it enables the integration of different systems, the processing of information or its further analysis.
Data conversion can involve file format changes as well as more complex operations such as data type conversion in programming languages, translation of database structures or signal transformations in digital systems. In technical practice, conversion often involves the transition between analogue and digital representations, which is performed by analogue-to-digital converters (ADCs) or digital-to-analogue converters (DACs). It also plays an important role in transferring and reading data between different devices and communication protocols.
Successful conversion requires consideration of syntactic and semantic compatibility to avoid interpretation errors or loss of information. In industrial applications and in Automation systems, this process must meet certain accuracy and reliability standards. Others, in the context of software, often involve the mapping of data between different logical or physical models. This requires the use of appropriate algorithms and tools that allow transformation without introducing unwanted distortions.
Data conversion plays a key role in ensuring the interoperability of information systems, the migration of data between IT environments and in device integration processes within systems IoT, industrial automation or numerical control.
