The Lysimeter is a specialised research instrument used in environmental sciences, agro-technology and hydrology for the quantitative and qualitative analysis of water movement processes in the soil and for the measurement of mineral losses, including nutrients, heavy metals or pesticides, due to leaching by rainwater or irrigation water. It provides a closed experimental system that allows precise modelling and control of hydrological parameters at the laboratory or field scale.
The basic design of a lysimeter comprises a cylindrical or rectangular tank filled with a soil layer of defined physico-chemical properties, with or without reconstituted vegetation, equipped with a drainage system to collect percolates, i.e. seepage water. In addition, modern lysimeters can be integrated with Humidity Sensors, Tensiometers 9 Soil Moisture Sensors), Flow Meters and data acquisition modules allowing continuous monitoring of parameters in real time.
Lysimeters are used for water balance studies, modelling contaminant transport in the soil profile and assessing the impact of different agricultural practices on the soil-water environment. In environmental studies, they allow the validation of simulation models of water flow and dissolved substances, as well as the assessment of the effectiveness of biological and physical barriers limiting the migration of harmful compounds. The design and scale of the lysimeters can be adapted to natural conditions or controlled experiments, both in laboratories and in the field.
