A PRBS (pseudo-random Bit Sequence) is a deterministic sequence of bits with statistical properties similar to random noise, generated by a digital circuit based on a specific algorithm. Although this sequence is fully predictable and cyclic, its bit distribution, correlation and frequency spectrum mimic the characteristics of a random signal, making it useful for testing transmission systems, digital logic circuits and communication devices.
Most commonly, PRBS is generated using a shift register with feedback (LFSR - Linear Feedback Shift Register), in which selected bits of the register are subjected to an XOR operation and fed back into the input. The selection of appropriate feedback coefficients and the number of register bits determines the period length and statistical quality of the string.
In telecommunications, PRBS is used to test transmission channels, fibre-optic links and coding devices, as it allows their response to realistic, varied data to be evaluated without the need for external signal sources. It is also used to measure bit errors (BER - Bit Error Rate) and analyse transmission quality. Thanks to the repeatability, it is possible to accurately compare the input and output signal, facilitating the detection of interference, delay or propagation errors.
PRBS is also used in digital electronics, in the testing of FPGAs, microcontrollers and encryption systems. It has the advantage of low hardware implementation cost and the ability to generate strings of a wide range of length and statistical complexity. Despite the lack of true randomness, a well-designed PRBS provides high bit entropy, making it a versatile engineering tool in the analysis and diagnosis of digital systems.
