Feedback is a phenomenon involving the return of a portion of a system’s output signal back to its input to influence the system’s behavior. It is a key regulatory mechanism used in automation, electronics, biology, economics, and many other fields where control of dynamic processes is essential. Feedback enables stabilization, disturbance compensation, accuracy improvement, and parameter regulation within a system.
Feedback can be either negative or positive, depending on whether it stabilizes or reinforces the process. Negative feedback counteracts changes in the output signal, leading to system stabilization. This type of feedback is widely used in temperature, rotational speed, and voltage control systems, as well as in biological homeostasis mechanisms. Positive feedback, on the other hand, amplifies deviations from equilibrium, potentially causing runaway effects, oscillations, or instability; thus, it is deliberately employed in specific applications such as electronic oscillators.
From a systems analysis perspective, feedback introduces a dependency between past and present values of system variables, making the system dynamic and often nonlinear. Mathematical models of such systems include differential or recursive equations, and their analysis helps assess stability, response speed, and control accuracy. In analog electronics, feedback is implemented using resistor-capacitor networks, transistors, or operational amplifiers, whereas in digital systems, feedback control algorithms are executed in software.
The effectiveness of feedback depends on appropriate design of the structure, measurement point, signal processing method, and system response time. In many areas of engineering, feedback remains a fundamental tool for achieving the desired dynamic and functional characteristics of control systems and signal processing.
