Interference is the phenomenon of unwanted signal interference between channels or transmission paths in electrical, electronic and telecommunications systems. It involves the transfer of some signal energy from one circuit to another, which can lead to interference, distortion of information or degradation of transmission quality. Crosstalk can occur both as interference to the useful signal and as modulation of unintended content between independent channels.
This phenomenon can be either conducted or radiated. In the case of conducted crosstalk, the interfering signal reaches the neighbouring track via common conducting paths such as power lines, ground or connectors. In the radiated version, on the other hand, electromagnetic coupling occurs between cables, circuit boards or circuits operating in close proximity, which is particularly important at high frequencies or high switching speeds.
In analogue systems, crosstalk results in the presence of an unwanted signal in an adjacent channel, e.g. interference in audio listening. In digital transmission, it can lead to misinterpretation of data, lower BER (Bit Error Rate) or loss of synchronisation. The effects of crosstalk depend on a number of factors, including the length and geometry of the cables, shielding, impedance characteristic of the tracks, the frequency of the signals and the quality of the circuit design.
Crosstalk minimisation is a key issue in the design of printed circuit boards, multichannel systems, transmission cables and communication interfaces. Appropriate methods of track separation, shielding, cable twisting, the selection of PCB topologies and the use of filters and differential techniques are used for this purpose.
