A viscometer is a measuring instrument used to determine the viscosity of a liquid, i.e. the resistance that a liquid exerts during flow or deformation under external forces. Viscosity is an important rheological property of a liquid, affecting its behaviour under conditions of flow, lubrication, mixing or transport. Viscosity measurement is crucial in chemistry, petrochemical, food and pharmaceutical industries, as well as in materials engineering and fluid mechanics.
Others classify viscometers into different types depending on the operating principle: capillary, rotary, ball, vibrating and others. A capillary viscometer, based on Poiseuille's law, measures the time it takes for a liquid to flow through a thin tube under gravitational force. On the other hand, a rotational viscometer, typical of industrial applications, determines the drag moment created when a cylinder or spindle immersed in a liquid is rotated, thus measuring dynamic viscosity.
For Newtonian liquids, whose viscosity does not depend on shear rate, the measurement is unambiguous and independent of flow conditions. For non-Newtonian fluids, whose properties change under deformation, more sophisticated methods and mathematical models are required to describe the relationship between stress and shear rate.
Digital and automatic viscometers offer additional features such as temperature measurement, data logging, calibration capability and computer interfacing to increase the accuracy and repeatability of measurements. Precise viscosity determination is essential for quality control, process optimisation and predicting fluid behaviour under different operating conditions. Viscometry is an important diagnostic and design tool in many fields of engineering and applied science.
