Actuator - definition

An actuator is an executive element of an automation system that converts a control signal—typically electrical, pneumatic, or hydraulic—into mechanical motion. Its function is to physically execute a command, such as moving a component, opening a valve, or activating a mechanism, based on instructions received from a controller or a supervisory system.

Actuators are essential components in control and automation systems, enabling these systems to respond to changing conditions in real time. Depending on their design and application, actuators may perform either linear or rotary movements. Common types include electric linear actuators, stepper motors, pneumatic cylinders, and motorized valves. In modern installations, actuators are often integrated with sensors, allowing for precise control and real-time monitoring.

In industrial engineering and robotics, actuators serve as the "muscles" of a device—translating control system decisions into tangible actions. In applications such as building automation, medical equipment, precision optics, or aerospace systems, the choice of a suitable actuator directly impacts the overall system's reliability, accuracy, and responsiveness.
