The stepper motor is a digitally controlled electric motor that converts electrical impulses into precise rotary movements with a precisely defined angle. Unlike classical rotary motors, whose speed and position depend on analogue signals or closed-loop control, the stepper motor performs a stepwise movement of the rotor according to the number and sequence of control pulses fed to its windings. Each pulse moves the rotor by a fixed angle, so that direct position control is possible without the need for sensors feedback.
Stepper Motors construction is based on a stator with windings and a rotor made of ferromagnetic material (in the case of reluctance motors) or fitted with permanent magnets. Depending on the type of design (e.g. unipolar, bipolar, hybrid motor), the control may differ in the way the phases are switched and the direction of current flow. Operation requires a dedicated controller that generates timing signals and determines the mode of operation - full-step, half-step or microstep - allowing the accuracy and smoothness of the movement to be adjusted.
Stepper Motors are particularly valued in applications where precise positioning, repeatability and control are required in the absence of system feedback. They are used in 3D printers, plotters, machines CNC, medical devices, laboratory automation and robotics. They have the advantage of simplicity of control and resistance to varying load conditions, while mechanical resonance, heating at standstill and torque loss at higher speeds can be a limitation.
By integrating with modern microstepping controllers, Stepper Motor Controllers have gained new possibilities for smooth motion and noise reduction, making them an attractive solution for many precision drive systems requiring open-loop control.
