Ferrite - definition

Ferrite is a group of ceramic materials with ferromagnetic properties, composed primarily of metal oxides such as iron, manganese, zinc, nickel, or cobalt. They are characterized by a spinel or garnet-type crystal structure in which metal cations are arranged in an ordered manner within an oxygen lattice. Due to this structure, ferrites exhibit strong magnetic properties combined with very high electrical resistivity, which significantly reduces eddy current losses in high-frequency applications.

Ferrite retains the ability to be magnetized similarly to conventional ferromagnetic materials, but its unique properties stem from its ceramic nature and limited electrical conductivity. The restricted conductivity makes ferrites particularly well-suited for use in radio-frequency and microwave devices. Owing to these characteristics, ferrites are widely used in transformer cores, inductors, electromagnetic interference (EMI) filters, antennas, and radio wave absorbers.

Depending on chemical composition and manufacturing conditions, the magnetic properties of ferrites can be tailored for various applications—from soft ferrites with low coercivity and minimal magnetic losses to hard ferrite materials used in the production of permanent magnets. Control over composition and microstructure also enables tuning of magnetic permeability, loss factor, and frequency response. In electronic engineering, ferrite is a key material that combines magnetic and dielectric properties in a way that is advantageous for operation in high-frequency and dynamically changing environments.
