Bandwidth is the range of frequencies over which a signal, transmission system, or electronic component effectively transmits or processes energy. It refers to the difference between the upper and lower frequency limits within which the signal level remains within a specified range—typically defined as a 3 dB drop from the maximum amplitude. This quantity is expressed in hertz (Hz) and is a key criterion for evaluating a system’s ability to accurately convey information.
In telecommunications, bandwidth defines the amount of information that can be transmitted through a channel per unit of time. The wider the bandwidth, the higher the data throughput and the ability to transmit more complex or faster signals. In electronics, bandwidth is used to characterize amplifiers, filters, antennas, and measurement systems, determining the frequency range over which the component operates effectively.
From a signal theory perspective, limited bandwidth affects the shape and fidelity of complex signals. In digital systems, it directly relates to sampling frequency and the ability to reconstruct signals according to the Nyquist theorem. In engineering practice, it is crucial to match the bandwidth to the nature of the signal, avoid aliasing effects, and suppress interference outside the usable frequency range.
In both wireless and wired transmission systems, bandwidth is a limited resource subject to legal regulations and frequency planning. The allocation of frequency bands for specific applications—such as mobile communications, satellite systems, or radar—is governed by international and national standards. Effective bandwidth management is essential for the reliable operation of modern communication systems and information infrastructure.
