Integrated Circuit (IC) - definition

Integrated Circuit (IC) is a miniature assembly of electronic components internally connected and embedded on a common semiconductor substrate, most commonly made of silicon. Its primary function is to perform specific electronic tasks such as signal amplification, data processing, information storage, or control of processes. Unlike traditional circuits composed of discrete components, an integrated circuit combines numerous transistors, resistors, capacitors, and other structures within a single hermetically sealed chip.

The construction of an integrated circuit is based on photolithography, a process that uses precisely patterned masks to imprint circuit layouts onto the surface of a semiconductor wafer. Component miniaturization enables the integration of millions or even billions of transistors into a silicon structure only a few square millimeters in size. As a result, integrated circuits feature extremely high component density, leading to compact dimensions, low power consumption, and high performance.

Integrated circuits are categorized by function into analog, digital, and mixed-signal types. In digital electronics, they include processors, memory units, registers, counters, and logic gates. In analog systems, they serve as operational amplifiers, filters, or signal converters. Mixed-signal ICs combine both analog and digital functions within a single chip, enabling the integration of complex control and data acquisition functionalities.

ICs are ubiquitous across all modern applications—from everyday consumer devices and automotive systems to advanced industrial and communication technologies. Their development laid the foundation for modern microelectronics, and due to their production scalability, they are the cornerstone of contemporary computing technologies and control systems.

Transfer Multisort Elektronik (TME) is one of the world’s largest global distributors of electronic components, electrotechnical parts, workshop equipment, and industrial automation.
