Amplitron is a microwave tube which is a variation of a travelling wave amplifier, used to amplify very high frequency signals. It belongs to a class of vacuum devices, in which energy is transferred from an electron beam to the electromagnetic field via guided wave interactions in a waveguide structure. Works on the principle of coupling between an electron beam travelling along a controlled magnetic field and an electromagnetic wave travelling in the opposite direction, thus enabling efficient energy transfer.
The key element of the amplifier is the ring waveguide, in which the electromagnetic wave propagates. A beam of electrons, emitted by cathode and accelerated towards the anode, enters into resonance with this wave field, which leads to a forced modulation of the electron velocity. As a result of this phenomenon, the conversion of of kinetic energy of electrons into the energy of the wave field, resulting in an amplification of the output signal.
Amplitrons are capable of high output powers and high efficiency, which makes them useful in applications requiring microwave generation or amplification, such as radiolocation, satellite communications, amplifiers for radars and high-frequency signal transmission systems. Due to their operation in the microwave range, amplifiers typically operate in the gigahertz band.
Although, over time, many applications of amplitrons have been taken over by solid-state amplifier circuits, they are still used in situations, where extremely high signal powers and stable operation under extreme environmental conditions are required. Their design requires advanced vacuum control, accurate magnetic field shaping and precise matching of waveguide elements.
