PIN diode - definition

A PIN Diode is a type of Semiconductor diode in which an additional, almost undoped area of type i (intrinsic) semiconductor is located between the classical p-type and n-type layers. This characteristic structure: p-i-n, significantly affects the electrical properties of the component, especially in terms of behaviour at high frequencies and under high irradiance conditions.

The presence of the i layer increases the width of the depleted region, resulting in higher breakdown voltage and better rectification properties. In the conducting state, the i layer becomes flooded with charge carriers, resulting in a relatively constant dynamic resistance and a linear increase in current as a function of voltage. In the forward state, the large depleted area allows for efficient charge separation and shorter switching times, which is important in pulsed and high-frequency applications.

Thanks to these characteristics, PIN Diodes are widely used in microwave technology as switches, modulators and power limiters. In Optoelectronics, they act as high-speed Photodiodes, capable of detecting pulses of light with high temporal precision. Their structure also favours applications in the detection of ionising radiation, where a large active detector volume is required.

Diodes' performance depends on the thickness and purity of the i layer, as well as the contact fabrication technology and the type of semiconductor material used. Typical materials are silicon and gallium arsenide, which allow the optical bandwidth and electrical characteristics to be tailored to specific applications.
