Fusion is the process of combining two or more objects into a single system with new properties, and is used in various fields of science and technology. In the context of nuclear physics, it refers to a reaction in which light atomic nuclei combine to form a heavier nucleus, accompanied by the release of a significant amount of energy. This mechanism occurs naturally inside stars, including the Sun, where the high temperature and pressure allow the electrostatic barrier between protons to be overcome.

In engineering and Automation, the term fusion often refers to the integration of data from different sensors to obtain more precise or complete information. An example is data fusion in navigation systems, where information from GPS, accelerometers and gyroscopes is processed into a coherent interpretation of position. This approach increases the reliability of the measurements and the robustness against single sensor noise and error.

In computer science, the term occurs, among other things, in the context of algorithms or data structures, where it means combining sets of information, often with a specific Hierarchy, priority or consistency. It can also refer to processes in artificial intelligence, e.g. combining results from different models or sources to produce a better decision or classification.

The meaning of the term fusion depends on the domain, but the common element remains the transformation of several inputs into a single, more complex or efficient result, often related to the processing of energy, information or materials.
