Holography is a branch of optics and a technology for recording and reconstructing three-dimensional information about objects, based on the phenomena of interference and diffraction of light. Unlike traditional imaging techniques, which only capture the intensity of light reflected from a surface, holography allows the recording of both the amplitude, and the phase of a light wave propagating from an object. This enables the subsequent reconstruction of a spatial image that faithfully reflects the depth and perspective of the scene.
The process of creating a hologram requires the use of a coherent light source - most often a laser - which is divided into a reference beam and a beam that illuminates the object. The waves reflected from the object interferes with the reference beam on a photosensitive medium (e.g. photographic emulsion, photopolymer plate), creating an interference recording of the phase distribution. The 3D image is reconstructed by exposing the recorded hologram to an identical reference beam, which reproduces the wave field originally emitted by the object.
Holography is used in numerous fields of science and technology: from holographic microscopy, to optical records with very high data density, to biometrics, document security systems and holographic displays. Digital holography techniques enable the numerical processing and reconstruction of light waves recorded by CCD arrays, which combines classical optics with modern signal processing. In emerging mixed reality technologies and spatial interfaces, holography acts as a key medium for generating immersive 3D visualisations without the need for special lenses or glasses.
