CCD matrix - definition

CCD (charge-coupled device) is a semiconductor optoelectronic circuit used to record images by converting light incident on the sensor surface into an electrical signal. Each photosensitive element, called pixel, accumulates an electrical charge proportional to the intensity of the light that falls on it during the exposure. The accumulated charge is then moved through the matrix structure and read out sequentially to form a digital image.

The principle of the CCD matrix is based on the photoelectric effect in silicon structures. Light incident on a pixel generates electron-hole pairs, of which electrons are trapped in the electrostatic well potential created by the MOS connectors. Once the illumination is complete, the charges are sequentially moved through the adjacent detector elements up to the amplified readout circuit, where they are converted to voltage and then digitised.

CCDs are characterised by very high signal uniformity, low noise and high sensitivity, especially at long exposure times. As a result, they have found applications in astrophotography, microscopy, imaging medicine, industrial cameras and in professional cameras and vision systems. However, they have the disadvantage of a relatively slow readout process and higher power requirements compared to newer technologies such as CMOS matrices.

The structure and architecture of the CCD matrix affect the resolution, dynamic range and speed of data processing. Single- and triple-channel versions allow monochrome or colour image capture, depending on the use of optical filters. Technological variations, such as frame-transfer or interline-transfer CCDs, allow the matrix parameters to be adapted to the requirements of a specific application, while maintaining a high quality of light signal reproduction.
