The Electrical Switch is an electrical apparatus component used for the manual or automatic switching on, switching off or switching over of electrical circuits by making or breaking current-carrying contacts. It is an essential component of control and protection systems in low and medium voltage installations, providing control over the flow of electricity.
From a technical point of view, the switch can operate under various load conditions: from no-load operation to switching operating and inrush currents and, in certain cases, short-circuit currents. Its design is based on a set of movable and immovable contacts that change their conduction state by mechanical or electromagnetic action. Others distinguish between manual, mechanical, electromagnetic and automatic switches, with different modes and parameters of operation, depending on their purpose and nature of work.
Switches are designed according to technical standards that define their electrical strength, mechanical life, switching capacity and degree of protection against external agents. Their applications range from simple lighting installations to complex industrial systems where safety, reliability and the ability to integrate with control systems are important. In modern systems, switches can be equipped with signalling elements, diagnostic systems and communication interfaces.
The appropriate selection of a switch depends on the type of receivers, operating conditions and functional and operational requirements. In engineering practice, parameters such as rated current, operating voltage, number of poles and timing characteristics of operation are crucial and must be adapted to the specific application and operating environment.
