Multiplexing, also known as multiplexing, is a technique used in telecommunications, transmission and digital systems to efficiently transmit multiple signals over a single transmission medium, while maintaining the integrity of the individual data streams. This process allows multiple channels of information to be transmitted simultaneously by appropriately separating them in the frequency, time, wavelength or coding domain.
In classical telecommunications, multiplexing is divided into several basic types: frequency-domain multiplexing (FDM), time-domain multiplexing (TDM), coding-domain multiplexing (CDM) and spatial-domain multiplexing (SDM). Each of these techniques relies on a different signal separation mechanism to make optimal use of the available channel bandwidth and minimise interference. For example, in FDM systems, individual signals are transmitted on different frequency bands, while in TDM different time slots are allocated within a common channel.
In modern communication networks, such as fibre-optic systems (WDM - Wavelength Division Multiplexing), multiplexing allows hundreds of channels of data to be transmitted over a single beam of light, significantly increasing system throughput. In digital systems, multiplexers are integral components of integrated circuits and microprocessors, enabling the selective transmission of data from multiple sources to a single receiver.
Multiplexing is used in a wide range of technologies, from mobile telephony and broadband internet, to digital TV broadcasting systems, to radar systems and satellite communications. The high efficiency of data transmission, reduced infrastructure costs and increased flexibility in managing transmission resources make multiplexing a fundamental technique for modern communication and information systems.
