Channel throughput is a parameter that defines the maximum amount of data that can be transmitted over a given communication channel per unit of time. In the context of telecommunications and Computer Networks it is usually expressed in bits per second (bits/s, bps) and reflects the ability of the transmission medium to carry information from the sender to the receiver without taking into account losses, interference or transmission errors.
The value of the throughput depends on a number of physical and technological factors, such as the width of the frequency band used by the channel, the level of noise, the modulation techniques used and the quality of the transmitting and receiving equipment. In digital systems, the actual transmission rate may be further limited by communication protocols, delays, retransmissions or error control mechanisms, which is why a distinction is often made between nominal and effective throughput.
From a theoretical point of view, the limits of channel throughput are described by Shannon's theorem, which relates the maximum possible transmission rate to bandwidth and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In practice, the concept of throughput refers not only to wired and wireless transmission channels, but also to interfaces between devices, data buses or computer memory.
From the point of view of the design of communication and network systems, knowledge and optimisation of the channel bandwidth is crucial to ensure adequate performance, minimise delays and effectively manage data traffic. This parameter is particularly important in multimedia transmission, real-time applications and systems requiring high reliability and stability of the connection.
