Radio wave propagation - definition

Radio wave propagation is a physical phenomenon that describes how electromagnetic waves in the radio range travel through space from the source of emission to the receiver. This process depends on a number of factors, including wavelength, atmospheric conditions, terrain, and the presence of natural and artificial obstacles. Radio waves can propagate in different ways - by reflection, refraction, diffraction, scattering or direct line of sight - which affects the range and quality of transmission.

In different frequency ranges, radio waves exhibit different propagation properties. Low frequencies, such as long waves, can travel long distances, partly following the curvature of the Earth. In contrast, waves at higher frequencies, e.g. ultra-short waves, propagate mainly rectilinearly and are more susceptible to attenuation and terrain obstacles. The ionosphere, a layer of the atmosphere capable of reflecting shortwave waves, also plays an important role in propagation, enabling communication over considerable distances.

The propagation environment can change dynamically, resulting in phenomena such as signal fading, multipath (multipath) or interference. In practical applications, e.g. in telecommunications, radar systems or radiolocation, consideration of radio wave propagation characteristics is crucial for designing Antennas, wireless networks and determining effective transmission range. Understanding propagation mechanisms makes it possible to predict the behaviour of signals under different conditions and optimise the parameters of radio communication systems.
