Remanence - definition

Remanence is a physical quantity that describes the residual magnetisation of a ferromagnetic material after the removal of an external magnetic field that previously saturated it. It is a measure of a material's ability to maintain magnetism its own and is one of the key parameters characterising the magnetic properties of a substance, along with coercivity and magnetic saturation. Remanence is denoted by the symbol Br and is expressed in teslas (T) in the SI system.

In solid state physics, remanence is associated with the presence of an ordered structure of magnetic domains that remain partially oriented even after the external magnetic field disappears. Depending on the characteristics of the material, remanence can be a desirable phenomenon - as in the case of permanent magnets - or an undesirable one, when it leads to the phenomena of hysteresis and energy loss in electromagnetic devices.

The magnetic hysteresis diagram showing the dependence of magnetic induction on magnetic field strength shows remanence as the induction value when the external field strength is zero. It is directly related to the energy stored in a material and determines its ability to permanently store magnetic information, which is used in magnetic memories, sensors, relays, Electric Motors and sensing devices.

In materials engineering, remanence control allows magnetic components to be designed with the desired dynamic and static characteristics. Materials with high remanence are used where a permanent magnetic field is required without the need for continuous power supply, while in applications where rapid change of magnetic state is crucial - materials with low remanence and minimal hysteresis are preferred.
