Electrical switchgear is an assembly of electrical power equipment used to distribute, control, protect and measure electricity in low, medium or high voltage systems. It is a key component of the power infrastructure, providing a safe and orderly connection between power sources and energy consumers. Switchgear comes in a variety of configurations and scales, from simple domestic installations to complex industrial systems and transmission networks.
Structurally, the switchgear consists of a protective enclosure and switchgear, protection, measurement and control equipment mounted inside, such as circuit breakers, disconnectors, contactors, fuses, transformers or relays. These components are installed in such a way as to allow easy service access and to ensure adequate conditions for cooling, protection against electric shock and thermal overload.
Switchgear is divided into substation, main, branch and terminal, depending on where it is used in the structure of the power system. They can be free-standing, recessed, modular or prefabricated, and their design must comply with the applicable technical standards, e.g. EN 61439. Important parameters are degree of protection IP, short-circuit resistance, rated current and rated voltage.
The functionality of switchgear includes not only energy flow management, but also rapid shutdown of circuits in the event of a fault, protecting people and equipment from the effects of short circuits, overloads and surges. In modern installations, switchgear is integrated with building automation, condition monitoring and remote energy management systems. Proper selection and configuration of the switchgear is crucial to the reliability, efficiency and safety of the entire power system.
