High voltage is a technical term referring to the value of the electrical voltage, which exceeds the established safety limits and requires special protection measures, insulating materials and operating procedures. Depending on the context - national standards, the type of installation and the operating environment - voltages above 1000 V in alternating current (AC) and above 1500 V in direct current (DC) are usually considered high voltage.
In electrical engineering high voltage systems are used to transmit and distribute electricity over long distances, as higher voltages allow for reduced transmission losses and lower current, resulting in smaller conductor cross sections and reduced thermal effects. In electricity infrastructure, high voltages are found in transmission lines, power transformers, switchgear, insulators and switching equipment.
In terms of safety, high voltage poses a risk to life and health, so installations of this type must comply with strict normative requirements (e.g. EN, IEC) regarding insulation, leakage distances, shielding and shock protection. Work on high voltage equipment requires specialised qualifications, personal protective equipment and technical supervision.
From a physical point of view, high voltages are also necessary in specialised applications such as X-ray apparatus, particle accelerators, electrostatic painting equipment, ignition systems or ionising sources. In these applications, it is important to control dielectric breakdown phenomena, corona emission and incomplete discharge.
High-voltage classification limits can be further subdivided into subcategories such as medium voltage, high voltage, extra-high voltage and ultra-high voltage, allowing a more accurate determination of the performance and design parameters of the equipment used.
