Charging station (EVSE) - definition

Charging station (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) is an infrastructural technical system for the transmission of electrical energy from the mains supply to electric vehicle (EV) traction batteries. This device acts as an intermediary between the energy source and the vehicle's charging management system, carrying out the energy transmission process in a safe, controlled manner and in compliance with current communication standards and data transmission protocols.

Others can operate in different power supply modes, either using alternating current (AC) - for slow and semi-fast charging stations - or direct current (DC), specific to fast charging installations. Built-in protection systems, such as RCD Circuit Breakers, vehicle presence detection systems, ground integrity monitoring systems and communication functions (e.g. ISO 15118 compliance), provide both operational safety and dynamic energy management capabilities in the context of smart grids.

Modern charging stations can be equipped with wireless communication modules, access authorisation systems, HMI interfaces and energy consumption monitoring functions. They require compliance with IEC, SAE, GB/T or CHAdeMO standards, depending on the region and vehicle technology. They play a key role in the development of electromobility and are an important part of the energy transition and decarbonisation of transport.
