Ultrasound are mechanical waves propagating in elastic media, whose frequency exceeds the upper limit of hearing of the human ear, which is approximately 20 kHz. Due to their nature, ultrasound is not perceived by humans as sound, but exhibits important physical and technological properties that enable its wide application in technology, medicine and science.
Ultrasound waves are longitudinal and transverse in nature and their propagation depends on the properties of the material through which they propagate - including density, elasticity and internal structure. The frequency of ultrasound determines its ability to penetrate materials and its resolution in diagnosis and detection. In higher frequency bands, imaging precision increases but penetration depth decreases.
In technology, ultrasound is usually generated using piezoelectric transducers or magnetostrictive transducers, which convert electrical energy into high-frequency mechanical vibrations. These vibrations can be used to probe the interior of objects, detect defects, measure distances, locate obstacles or image the inside of the human body. In industrial applications, ultrasound plays a key role in cleaning, welding, emulsifying or accelerating chemical reactions, thanks to its ability to generate cavitation and local pressure changes.
From the point of view of technical acoustics and Automation, ultrasound is used as an information carrier in non-contact Measurement Sensors, positioning systems, presence detection and echolocation-based control systems. Their use requires consideration of parameters such as wavelength, acoustic impedance, attenuation in the medium and reflection at phase boundaries, which affect the accuracy and efficiency of ultrasonic systems.
