Moisture meter is a measuring instrument used to determine the water vapour content of gases, most often in atmospheric air, or in solid materials and liquids. Its primary task is to determine the relative humidity, absolute humidity or dew point, depending on the specific application. Relative humidity is the ratio of the current amount of water vapour to the maximum amount that the air can hold at a given temperature, expressed as a percentage.
Others use different principles of operation depending on the application and measurement requirements: psychrometric, condensation, capacitive, resistive or optoelectronic methods. Psychrometric moisture meters are based on measuring the temperature difference between a dry and a wet thermometer, while capacitive instruments measure the dielectric changes of a moisture-responsive material. Modern Humidity Sensors often integrate humidity measurements with temperature measurements, allowing the calculation of additional parameters such as point or absolute humidity.
In engineering, moisture meters are indispensable tools in air conditioning, food and beverage, pharmaceutical, materials and construction industries, where moisture control is crucial to maintain product quality, optimise processes and maintain appropriate environmental conditions. In Automation systems, humidity meters are elements of microclimate monitoring and control systems, ensuring stability of environmental parameters in clean rooms, server rooms or warehouses for moisture-sensitive raw materials. The design of modern hygrometers often includes communication interfaces (e.g. Modbus, I²C, 4-20 mA), enabling their integration with SCADA systems and Internet of Things (IoT) solutions.
