(192)There are a lot of different kinds of car antennas. Thanks to this fact it is possible to choose the one that is appropriate for vehicle’s brand and to meet various requirements connected with an installation method.
Fundamental part of every antenna is an antenna mast (often simply called the antenna). It consists of a fastening element and a radiator. Construction of the antenna is covered with isolation material which provides resistance to meteorological factors.
Antenna masts are available in different lengths. They are designed to operate in different frequency bands, e.g. in AM, FM and DAB broadcast bands, and there are also universal ones. Frequency band supported by the antenna does not depend on its length; modern antennas are of helical type. It means that they consist of a spiral wire (radiator) wound around a fiberglass core. Thanks to this fact, antennas are shorter than it would result from λ/4 wave length. Nevertheless, the longer the antenna, the more effective signal reception.
An antenna mast is frequently installed in the antenna socket; it is mounted on M5, M6 bolt, with right-hand or left-hand thread.
A socket mounted in the hole in a vehicle’s body is also important element of car antennas. Its task is to seal the connection, lead the signal from the antenna to the radio receiver, and to provide mechanical stability. There are two types of antenna sockets: sockets with an antenna mast mounted in only one position and sockets with an antenna mast the position of which can be adjusted. Sockets with an antenna mounted in one position are usually used for short antennas. The length of long antennas is usually adjustable what ensures aerodynamic shape and eliminates air whistles at high speeds.
Available models differ in the length of a coaxial cable. A lot of them are designed for specific vehicle brands. Fastening elements, length and design of the antenna match factory fitted versions. A cable can be connected to a socket for good or be detachable, what makes installation easier but increases susceptibility to interference.
Small antennas are often equipped with an internal signal amplifier. Such constructions are often called SHARK because of their shape (they resemble a dorsal fin of a shark). Amplifiers can come with internal antennas (usually in a plastic enclosure). It has to be noted that it is possible to buy only an amplifier (in the form of extension of antenna cable). This, however, does not change the fact that long, external antennas, mounted on the vehicle’s roof, guarantee the best signal reception.
