(102)Crimping is a method of permanently attaching a terminal or contact end to an electrical conductor by pressure forming or reshaping a metal sleeve around the conductor. Making the right connection depends on the correctly selected cable, crimp sleeve and tool - this ensures a connector that has both good electrical and mechanical properties. This does not mean that we will need different crimp tools for different cable types. Many crimping tools are multifunctional and, in addition to compression, also allow bending, cutting, stripping and similar operations. They are designed to work with specific sizes of cables, wires, or pipes.
Various types of crimping tools are available, each with their advantages and disadvantages. For smaller crimping requirements where precision is key, a manual crimping tool will most likely suffice. These are the ones we usually deal with when we are busy terminating cable ends, but when more force is required, hydraulic, pneumatic, or electric models are also available.

While it is a good rule to buy a crimping tool that is as close as possible to your specifications, wire gauge and crimp type used, these tools can be universal in size and function. Even basic models support different cable and connector diameters. Better quality tools may have interchangeable jaw sets that give the ability to handle three or four times as many sizes and potentially different types of connectors. Stripping insulation is an essential part of any crimping operation; some tools are equipped with blades for stripping insulation. The kit may also include wire cutters. Crimping tool kits can extend this further by adding cable testers or cable clamps.
