(776)A potentiometer is an adjustable resistor, whose resistance can be changed mechanically (by rotation or linear movement). It has three outputs, two of them are connected to a fixed resistive path and the third one connects to a slider which moves along the path, providing electrical contact with a given part. Consequently, it can be said that potentiometers functions as a voltage divider. The resistance element is often made of graphite, but it also happens to be made of cermet - a composite material baked out of ceramic and metal materials. Potentiometers are used in audio equipment (for example for volume control), processing machines and automation (speed control of engines). When it comes to resistance growth characteristics, one can distinguish linear, exponential and logarithmic potentiometers.
