(6 011)A transistor is a semiconducting electronic component used either to amplify an electrical signal or to implement an electronic switch. This element usually consists of three terminals, and its operation is based on the fact that with a use of small electric current it is possible to control the flow of a high electric current. Transistors can be further divided into two main categories - bipolar<(PNP / NPN) and unipolar (also called field effect transistors, for example MOSFET). In bipolar transistors a base, an emitter and a collector are the layers of the semiconductor and the electric current flows between the base and the emitter. On the other hand, the unipolar type consists of a source, a drain and a gate which is responsible for the control. In this categorization it is also worth distinguishing the IGBT transistors which are characterized by an isolated gate and combine features of unipolar and bipolar transistors. Consequently, they are an interesting alternative for MOSFET types of transistors and work well in inverters and converters (fast switching, low voltage controlgear and no large energy losses).
