Hybrid circuit is a technical structure that combines different technologies, methods or components to achieve functional properties that could not be achieved with a single type of solution. In electronics, the term most commonly refers to Hybrid integrated circuits, which are circuits built from a combination of discrete components and integrated circuits mounted on a common ceramic, metal or glass substrate. This approach enables the creation of compact and highly reliable electronic devices, especially in specialised applications where precision, environmental ruggedness and custom functions are important.
Others hybrid circuits can incorporate different semiconductor technologies, e.g. combining Bipolar transistors with MOSFETs or integrating analogue and digital components into a single functional structure. From a technical point of view, this allows for higher efficiency, better temperature characteristics and more advanced functionality than conventional monolithic integrated circuits. Components are often assembled using a thin-film or thick-film technique, which enables precise alignment and miniaturisation of the entire module.
In addition to electronics, the concept of a hybrid system is also found in Automation, Power Sources, Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science, where it implies the integration of different Power Sources, control algorithms or computational models. In hybrid control systems it is possible to combine discrete and continuous models, while in hybrid vehicles it is possible for combustion and electric Actuators to work together. Regardless of the field, the basic feature of a hybrid system is the synergistic use of the advantages of components with different physical, logical or technological properties within a single, coherent system.
