What is the difference between a microSD card and a TF card?

The microSD card and the TF (TransFlash) card are technically the same type of storage medium. They differ only in the trade name used in the early days of the technology. Today, the terms are used interchangeably and there is no physical or functional difference between the two.

Origin of the name TF

TF (TransFlash) card was developed by company SanDisk in 2004 as the world's smallest Memory Cards format based on flash technology. It was a response to the need to miniaturise storage media for mobile devices such as mobile phones and MP3 players. Shortly afterwards, the technology was adopted by the SD Association, which gave it the official name microSD - incorporating it into the SD family of standards. As a result, the TF card formally became the microSD card, and all new media manufactured to the SD specification are microSD. They support the FAT16, FAT32, exFAT file systems, as well as advanced features such as encryption, write protection and A1/A2 performance classes.

Compatibility and application of TF cards

From the user's point of view, there is no need to distinguish between TF and microSD cards. Both types fit in the same slots, use the same communication interfaces (SPI or SDIO) and are fully interchangeable. Most of today's hardware and Memory Cards manufacturers already use the designation 'microSD' exclusively, while 'TF' can be found in the documentation of older devices or in cheap products of Chinese origin. However, it is worth bearing in mind that the term 'TF' may be used in marketing by some manufacturers as a generic name, sometimes referring to cards without full SD Association certification. In such cases there is a risk of lower quality or non-compliance with SD speed classes and standards, which can affect performance and reliability. And although functionally there is no need to distinguish between TF and microSD, but from the point of view of compatibility, quality and data security, it is recommended to use cards marked microSD with SD Association certification.
