Memory Cards typically cease to function as a result of flash memory wear, logical file system damage, controller failure or mechanical physical damage. Any of these causes can lead to a sudden loss of data access or a complete unresponsiveness of the device to the inserted card.
NAND flash memory technology, as used in SD and microSD cards, is based on a limited number of write and erase cycles. With use, the cells holding the data gradually lose their ability to write stably until the card stops working or goes into read-only mode. This phenomenon is typical of media used for a long time in write-intensive devices such as video recorders or surveillance cameras.
Improper card disconnection, interrupted recording, software errors or malware infection can lead to damage to the logical data structure. In this case, the card may be visible by the system, but requests formatting, reports missing files or displays errors. It is sometimes possible to repair it with Tools such as chkdsk or SD Formatter, but aggravated logical damage can effectively prevent further use.
Each card contains an embedded microcontroller, which manages the data flow and communication with the device. When it fails (e.g. due to an overvoltage, manufacturing defect or overheating), the card is no longer recognised and becomes inaccessible. This type of failure is often permanent and irreversible without specialist data recovery and usually marks the end of the life of the media.
MicroSD cards are susceptible to bending, cracking and contact damage, which can lead to communication problems with the reader. Even minor deformations or dirt can prevent the contents from being read correctly. Also, improper use of SD Adapters or Memory Cards slots in devices can accelerate wear and tear and lead to permanent failure. Memory Cards, although small in size, are complex electronic circuits that can cease to function over time and under operating conditions. Regular backups and careful use are essential measures to protect against data loss.
