Programmable Logic Array (PLA) is a digital integrated circuit that enables the implementation of arbitrary logic functions through appropriate programming of its connection structure. It consists of two logic layers: the first implements conjunction (AND) functions, and the second disjunction (OR) functions. Both layers are programmable, allowing flexible definition of relationships between input and output signals. This architecture supports the implementation of a wide range of Boolean functions optimized for specific applications.
PLA operation is based on configurable cross-connections between inputs and logic gates. Depending on the technology, the array can be programmed once (e.g., by fusing connections) or reprogrammed multiple times using EEPROM memory or reconfigurable technologies. This enables rapid design and deployment of custom logic without the need for dedicated ASIC development. PLA is primarily used where specific logic functions are required with a limited number of inputs and outputs.
From the perspective of digital systems engineering, the Programmable Logic Array is one of the simplest types of programmable devices, alongside solutions such as PAL (Programmable Array Logic), GAL (Generic Array Logic), and more advanced FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) architectures. Compared to these, PLA offers greater flexibility in logic definition but less scalability and weaker timing performance, which limits its application to simpler designs.
PLA plays an important role in education, prototyping, and embedded systems, where compactness and rapid adaptation to changing functional requirements are essential. Modern design tools allow automatic generation of PLA configurations from hardware description languages such as VHDL or Verilog, facilitating integration into larger digital systems.
