The Bootloader is a special program that runs first after power-up in a computer or microprocessor system. Its primary task is to initialise and prepare the hardware environment and transfer control to the appropriate operating system or user program. The bootloader operates at a low level and is usually stored in permanent non-volatile memory, allowing it to run independently of the operating system.
In embedded systems, the bootloader can also act as a interface for programming the microcontroller's flash memory, allowing the software to be updated without the need for an external programmer. This allows remote loading of application code, often via serial port, USB, Ethernet or other communication channels. In many cases, the bootloader offers protection against unauthorised tampering, e.g. by verifying digital signatures or access passwords.
In personal computer architecture, the bootloader is responsible for locating the operating system on the storage medium, loading its image into the operating memory and starting its execution. Popular bootloaders, such as GRUB (GNU GRUB) or Windows Boot Manager, allow a choice of multiple operating systems installed on a single device. They often include boot menus and diagnostic and system recovery mechanisms.
Due to its key role in the boot process, the bootloader must be reliable, small and fast. Its architecture is closely tied to the hardware chip of a particular device, which means that different platforms require dedicated versions of this software. In many applications, the bootloader is regarded as a critical component for the security and integrity of the entire system.
