PHP - definition

PHP (Hypertext Preprocessor) is an interpreted scripting language designed primarily for creating dynamic web pages and server-side web applications. Initially developed as a simple collection of CGI tools, PHP has evolved into a full-fledged general-purpose programming language with a rich set of features for databases, sessions, forms, files, network communication and programming interfaces.

PHP code is embedded directly into HTML documents and executed on the server side, and the result of the operation - usually in the form of HTML code - is sent to the user's browser. This allows the user to access updated content, generated from application logic, database data or user actions, without exposing the source code itself.

PHP is characterised by its dynamic typing, loose syntax and high flexibility to integrate with Others technologies, which has contributed to its widespread adoption in the web environment. It supports numerous database management systems, including MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite and Oracle, and allows it to work with popular network protocols, making it a versatile tool for building web applications.

The language supports the object-oriented programming paradigm and procedures, offering mechanisms for classes, inheritance, interfaces and exceptions. It has been extensively developed by the open source community and is gaining further improvements in terms of performance, security and compliance with modern programming standards. PHP is the foundation of many content management systems (CMS), such as WordPress, Joomla and Drupal, as well as numerous web frameworks, e.g. Laravel, Symfony and CodeIgniter.

Versions of PHP are constantly being updated, and modern implementations provide mechanisms for caching, code optimisation and interoperability with modern HTTP servers, allowing scalable and secure web applications to be built.
