Current source - definition

A current source is a component of an electrical circuit, whose main characteristic is to provide a constant current regardless of the voltage value at its terminals. Ideally, a current source generates a well-defined current regardless of load resistance or other external conditions. In reality, any real current source has a limited ability to maintain a constant current - especially at voltage extremes or in the presence of disturbances.

Unlike a voltage source, which dictates the value of the voltage in the circuit, a current source determines the value of the current and the voltage is shaped according to the impedance of the connected load. This behaviour makes current sources particularly useful in applications where precise control of current flow is important, irrespective of changes in load parameters.

Current sources are widely used in electronic circuits, including as active loads in transistors, reference generators, power supply elements for LEDs, operational amplifiers or analogue-to-digital converters. Their design can be based on active elements such as Bipolar transistors or field-effect transistors, in configurations that provide current stability through feedback or precise voltage reference.

In circuit analysis, current sources are often used as model simplifications, allowing simulations and calculations based on the mesh or node method. There are also voltage-controlled current sources (VCCS) and current-controlled current sources (CCCS), which are used to model complex dynamic and non-linear relationships in electronic systems.

Parameters such as voltage operating range, current stabilisation accuracy and temperature characteristics determine the quality and usability of the actual current source in a specific application. The proper selection of these characteristics is crucial to ensure the correct operation of current-sensitive systems.
