The farad (F) is the SI unit of electrical capacitance, defined as the capacity to store one coulomb (C) of electric charge when subjected to a potential difference of one volt (V). The unit is named after Michael Faraday, a British physicist and chemist who made pioneering contributions to the development of electromagnetism and electrochemistry. Capacitance describes a system’s ability to store energy in an electrostatic field, and the farad is the standard unit used to quantify this property.
In practical terms, the farad is a very large unit, so its submultiples—such as the microfarad (μF), nanofarad (nF), and picofarad (pF)—are more commonly used in technical applications. The primary component that exhibits capacitance is the capacitor, a device consisting of two conductive plates separated by a dielectric material. The amount of charge a capacitor can store depends on the applied voltage and the type and geometry of the dielectric used. The greater the capacitance, the more energy the capacitor can store at a given voltage.
In electronic circuits, capacitance measured in farads influences the circuit’s temporal behavior, such as delay, signal attenuation, or filtering capability. Capacitors of various capacitances are used in power supplies, resonant circuits, filters, converters, and timing circuits. Capacitance also plays an essential role in energy transmission, charge storage, and the design of microwave components and integrated electronic structures.
