Capacitance is a physical quantity describing a system’s ability to store electric charge under the influence of an applied voltage. In electrical engineering and electronics, the term most commonly refers to the property of capacitors, which store energy in the electric field formed between two conductive plates separated by a dielectric. Capacitance indicates how much electric charge can be accumulated on the plates of a capacitor per volt of potential difference between them and is expressed in farads (F).
Mathematically, capacitance (C) is defined as the ratio of electric charge (Q) to voltage (U), meaning that a higher capacitance allows more charge to be stored at the same voltage level. In practice, smaller units such as microfarads, nanofarads, and picofarads are used, since one farad is relatively large for typical electronic applications. The capacitance value depends on the geometry of the conductors, the type and thickness of the dielectric, and the material properties involved.
Capacitance plays a key role in the operation of filter circuits, oscillators, voltage converters, memory devices, signal transmission systems, and surge protection circuits. In alternating current (AC) circuits, it influences capacitive reactance—the tendency to resist changes in voltage—which is used to control the frequency and phase characteristics of signals. Capacitance also occurs between any conductors separated by a dielectric, which is relevant in analyzing parasitic parameters that can affect the performance of electronic circuits.
In a broader physical context, electrical capacitance may also refer to single conductors relative to their environment or distributed systems in which the potential and electric field distribution is spatially complex. A thorough understanding of capacitance is essential in both the design of electronic circuits and the analysis of electromagnetic phenomena.
