Big Data is a term describing a collection of data characterized by immense volume, high variability, and great diversity, whose size and complexity exceed the capabilities of traditional data management systems and conventional analysis techniques. These data can come from various sources, such as IoT devices, social media, financial transactions, industrial sensor logs, text documents, or multimedia recordings, creating unstructured, semi-structured, and structured informational resources.
In data engineering practice, Big Data encompasses technologies for storing, processing, and analyzing distributed data in real-time or with minimal delay. Key technological solutions include distributed file systems (such as the Hadoop Distributed File System), databases NoSQL, data streaming platforms, and advanced analytical tools based on machine learning and artificial intelligence.
In Big Data analysis, data mining techniques, natural language processing (NLP), and predictive analytics are also crucial, enabling the extraction of valuable patterns, correlations, and forecasts from vast data sets. Scalability of infrastructure, fault tolerance, and the ability to operate in distributed environments are fundamental requirements for systems processing Big Data. The application of these technologies is found in many industries, such as the financial, telecommunications, industrial, medical, and public administration sectors, enabling decision-making based on analyses on an unprecedented scale.
Challenges associated with Big Data also include issues of information security, privacy protection, and ensuring compliance with legal regulations such as GDPR or HIPAA, which necessitates the use of advanced identity management methods, data encryption, and access auditing.
