Electrostatics is the branch of physics concerned with the study of phenomena associated with electric charges at rest and electrostatic interactions between them. It describes the laws governing electric forces, the distribution of charge on the surfaces of conductors, the properties of insulators and the effects of electric fields on dielectric materials. Electrostatics forms the basis for understanding more complex electromagnetic phenomena and has applications in both science and technology.
The basic concept in electrostatics is electric charge, which exists in positive or negative form and is the source of the electric field. The interaction force between charges is described by Coulomb's law, which is an analogue of the law of gravity, but taking into account the sign of the charge and the possibility of both attractive and repulsive forces. The distribution of the electric field in space is described by the electric potential and the lines of force of the field, while inside dielectric materials the polarisation and the effect of the dielectric constant on the weakening of the field are analysed.
In conductors, charges accumulate on surfaces and move towards a state of equilibrium where the electric field inside the material disappears. In insulators, on the other hand, charges remain locally trapped and the electric field can penetrate through the volume of the material. Electrostatics also explains phenomena such as electrostatic induction, electrostatic shielding and charge distribution on blades and curved surfaces.
Practical applications of electrostatics include the design of capacitors, insulators, electrostatic shielding, and devices such as electroscopes, laser printers, electrostatic separators and dust collection systems. Knowledge of this field is also essential to prevent uncontrolled charge accumulation in industrial environments, where electrostatic discharge (ESD) can lead to equipment damage or fire hazards.
