MES (Manufacturing Execution System) is an integrated information system that supports the real-time management and control of manufacturing processes at plant level. It bridges the gap between enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems and the layer of Automation and execution equipment, enabling consistent monitoring, control and optimisation of production in relation to current operating conditions.
The main task of the MES is to collect, process and share data coming directly from the production line, machines, sensors and operators. This makes it possible to track the progress of production orders, control quality parameters, manage human and material resources, and identify deviations from the plan. The system allows the creation of accurate reports, performance analyses (e.g. OEE - Overall Equipment Effectiveness) and the recording of production history (so-called product genealogy).
The MES supports the implementation of functions defined by the ANSI/ISA-95 standard, such as production operations management, task scheduling, quality supervision, process data collection, intermediate storage management and maintenance. Its architecture implies close integration with SCADA systems, PLC and databases, which allows for comprehensive support of the production environment.
From a technical point of view, the MES system must be flexible, scalable and resilient to process variability. It is crucial to ensure low latency data processing, high availability and information security, as not only production continuity but also compliance with quality standards, industry regulations and customer requirements depend on its operation.
Today's MES solutions are increasingly utilising cloud technologies, mobile user interfaces, predictive analytics and integration with IoT systems, enabling dynamic responses to change, improving operational efficiency and supporting Industry 4.0 concepts.
