Acoustic noise is a disordered sound with no clear harmonic structure and no predictable temporal pattern, which results from random fluctuations of sound pressure in an elastic medium such as air. In physical terms, noise is a wave phenomenon covering a broad frequency band, often continuous in nature, with no clearly dominant tonal components. In technical and environmental practice, the term refers to sounds that interfere with the perception of useful signals or cause auditory discomfort.
Others may have different sources: natural (e.g. wind, sea noise), technological (operation of machinery, vehicle traffic), and internal - related to the operation of electroacoustic equipment and public address systems. In electroacoustics and measurement acoustics, noise is treated as a phenomenon relevant to the quality of sound transmission and the effectiveness of recording, playback and signal processing systems. In engineering applications such as the design of microphones, amplifiers or noise reduction systems, noise is the limiting factor of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), a key parameter affecting sound clarity.
Others are different types of acoustic noise from a technical point of view, classified according to their energy distribution in the frequency band, e.g. white noise (with a constant power spectrum), pink noise (with a power drop of 3 dB per octave) or brown noise (with even stronger attenuation of high-frequency components). Analysis and modelling of acoustic noise are important in the design of acoustic environments, sound engineering and noise protection, including the assessment of the impact of unwanted sounds on human health and comfort.
